About Sandsletta to Langøya and Varnestangen

A tour for experienced paddlers. The route takes you from Sandletta to Langøya, a fascinating island with a special history.

The adventure is part of Padleled Vestfold and the entry point for the adventure is Sandsletta at Re.

Getting there

From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 50 kilometers until you reach exit 28-Bergsenga-krysset for Fv313 toward Sande N. Follow Fv313 south for 20 kilometers until you reach Fv315 and Holmestrand. Drive through Holmestrand and back onto Fv313 for another 5 kilometers until you reach the road, Sandsveien, directing you to “Sand Camping”. Follow the road for a few hundred meters following signs to Sand Camping and where you will find parking.

Trail description

From Sandletta, the route heads north along the shoreline in rural surroundings. Soon you will pass the small boat docks at Snekkestad and the landscape changes and the shoreline becomes quite steep. There are a few areas along the shore where you can land and stretch your legs.

On the northern point of the peninsula, Mulodden, you will pass a famous lighthouse. Here you have a good view over the sandy bay to the west and the island, Langøya, to the northeast. This area is also a popular fishing spot.

From Mulodden, cross over to the north side of the island, Langøya. Today, Langøya is a recreational area, a protected area, and landfill for hazardous waste. There is a ferry between Holmestrand center and Langøya, so be cautious when crossing the strait.

When you arrive at the island, we recommend to take a break at the recreational area. The route then goes south along the western coast until you reach the southern tip of the island. From here, head directly south of the island and across the strait until you arrive at Varnestangen, a nice picnic area on the point. The area is only accessible by foot, bike, or boat and is a great place to relax and enjoy the evening sun. From Varnestangen, head west into the bay at Fredbergsvik and then north along the coast to return to Sandletta.

At Sandletta you can find:

  • Toilet, fresh water, shower facilities
  • Campsite
  • Parking
