About Sandebukta Loop

Sandebukta offers great paddling in the open waters of the bay. Enjoy the sunset or sunrise while camping in the recreational areas of the islands.

The adventure is part of Padleled Vestfold and the entry point for the adventure is Bjerkøymoloen.

Getting there

From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 50 kilometers until you reach exit 28 - Fv313 towards Sande N. Follow Fv313 for 8 kilometers before turning left onto Fv319 towards Svelvik. Follow Fv319 for 9.5 kilometers until you reach Bjerkøya on your right, where you will see the parking lot immediately in front of you.

Walk with your kayaks out to the pier and start the paddling route from there.

Trail description

From the pier, the route takes you through the strait between Bjerkøya and Killingen, directly south. On the island Killingen, you pass the well-preserved local gem, Camp Killingen, where there has been a vacation community since the 1940s. A little further south lies Veslekillingen, a self-service DNT cabin where one can book accommodation.

After passing rounding the southern tip of Killingen, head southwest towards the small island, Gåserumpa, where you will find several nice tent and picnic areas. Here one can explore the island and find lots of fossils.

The trip continues north, along the eastern side of Kommersøya, an uninhabited island with beautiful cultural landscapes and an exciting history. Here, you find many nice possibilities for taking a break or even staying the night, both at Teltsletta in the south, and in Fantebukta in the north.

From the north end of Kommersøya, cross over the strait to Engenestangen in the west and follow the coastline north to Skjervika, where you will find a recreation area with all the facilities you need. After passing Holm Brygge, cross over to Kverntangodden and Nordre Jarlsberg pier on the eastern coast, where you will experience a lively atmosphere in the summer.

From from Nordre Jarlsberg pier, follow the coastline to the southeast, past the recreational area at Bekkestrand and return to the starting point at Bjerkøymoloen.
