If you want to experience a wide variety of landscape and visit both Svelvik and Holmsbu, this is the route for you.
The adventure is part of Padleled Vestfold and the entry point for the adventure is Batteriøya.
Getting there
From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 47 kilometers until you reach exit 27: “Eikkrysset toward Åskollen/Skoger”. Follow Fv319 for 19 kilometers until reaching Svelvik. Turn left onto Storegaten and an immediate right onto Skånegaten. Paid parking is available directly ahead.
Trail description
Be aware of the boat traffic in this area during the summer season. If you prefer not paddling among many boats, try this route in the morning or in the evening when there is less traffic.
From Batteriøya, the paddling route heads south along the coast for a few hundred meters. Wait for a clear opportunity before crossing over to the eastern coastline. Keep in mind that the Svelvik current is Norway's second strongest tidal flow and can be strong during some parts of the day. Be aware of crossing traffic!
After reaching Hurum on the other side of the fjord, the route continues southwards. This stretch of the coastline is steep and it can be difficult to land the kayak onshore. A good place enjoy a break from paddling is at Bjørneskjær before heading further down to Holmsbu, one of the fjords gems which has a bustling life in the summer.
If you have the opportunity to stay the night, we recommend booking the the coastal cabin, Kystledhytta Bakkeskjær. There are picnic areas located at the guest harbor in Holmsbu, and we also recommend landing at both Bugtestranda and Hotellstranda.
After an enjoyable experience in Holmsbu, cross over to the western coast of the fjord and head north. This side of Drammensfjord is characterized by shallower areas, which can provide views of wildlife and especially the local birds. You will paddle by Homannsberget Camping, a beautiful beach with outdoor facilities before returning back to Batteriøya.
