About Kjøpmannskjær to Svelvikstranda and Kjølholmen
A great overnight trip for beginners in the middle of Vestfold's archipelago.
From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 96 kilometers until you reach exit 35-Gullikrysset for Rv308 toward Tønsberg/Nøtterøy/Tjøme. Follow Fv308 for 17.5 kilometers through Tønsberg until you reach Kjøpmannskjær on the very southern part of Nøtterøy. Directly across from the KIWI market, turn right onto Torbjørnrødveien and immediately another right at Kirkeveien where you will find parking.
From Kjøpmannskjær, paddle south along Nøtterøy’s shoreline under the Vrengen bridge and further until you reach the southern tip of Bjønnhue. From here, cross the strait over to Tjøme. Be aware of boat traffic in this area. Follow the Tjøme shoreline southwards. Beaches and piers will be found along the shoreline and it is generally easy to land, but be respectful of the cabin homeowners.
About 2 kilometers down the shoreline you reach Svelvik beach where you will find a great recreational area and campground. Just across the strait, on the northern tip of Vakersholmen island, you will find good landing areas in the north and northwest. It will be quieter on the islands than on the mainland beach.
The return to Kjøpmannskjær is via Veierland island. From Vakersholmen island, paddle across the strait to the island in the northwest. Follow along its eastern coastline until you reach the northern edge, Kjølholmen, where there is also a great place to pitch a tent. From here, paddle north across the strait to Nøtterøy. There is another great beach found next to the coastal cabin Søndre Tenvik. Continue following the coastline to the east and then north until you return to Kjøpmannskjær.
Take a trip around Vakersholmen by paddling south and following the shoreline. It's a beautiful detour. If you want an even longer addition, a trip around the islands, Hui and Veierland, is recommended.
At Kjøpmannskjær you can find:
- Grocery stores
- Public restrooms
- Fresh water
