The word Panoramic describes the trail in all it's glory. The hike is open from mid June to October, depending on the snowconditions.
The hike starts at Røte, a 10 minute drive from Hotel Ullensvang, close to the village Kinsarvik. If you don't have your own car we would recommend a local taxi from your hotel to the starting point or from the end point of the trail to the hotel.
Parking at Røte costs NOK 200 for a full day.
From Røte, you follow a gravel and mud road to the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, 890 m.a.s.l. This is where the marked trail starts.
The local Lions Club has marked the trail according to instructions from HM Queen Sonja. This is truly a panorama trail, offering breathtaking views of the southern part of the fjord, Odda, the Folgefonna glacier, Hardanger bridge and Eidfjord. You can also see all the way over to Kvanndal and Utne, and along the fjord to Kinsarvik.
The descending part of this trail goes to Hotel Ullensvang. The 616 steps are made by local monks, who started the arduous work in 1210 and finished in 1537. The steps are now known as the Monk Steps.
The beginning of the trail can be wet as you cross two morass areas - bring waterproof hiking shoes. Walking sticks are recommended for the descending part back to Lofthus.
Where to stay
Hotel Ullensvang is the perfect place to stay situated close to Hardangerfjorden. The outside pool is a great recovery from a long day hiking.
