About Indre Vrengen

A round trip in Vrengen is like a kayaking journey through a small country. Here you will meet everything from pretty islets, beautiful beaches, quaint cabins, restaurants, and industrial areas.

The adventure is part of Padleled Vestfold and the entry point for the adventure is Kjøpmannskjær.

Getting there

From Oslo, follow E18 east towards Kristiansand for nearly 96 kilometers until you reach exit 35-Gullikrysset for Rv308 toward Tønsberg/Nøtterøy/Tjøme. Follow Fv308 for 17.5 kilometers through Tønsberg until you reach Kjøpmannskjær on the very southern part of Nøtterøy. Directly across from the KIWI market, turn right onto Torbjørnrødveien and immediately another right at Kirkeveien where you will find parking.

Trail description

From Kjøpmannskjær, paddle east and follow the northern side of the strait along Nøtterøy’s shoreline. After passing the point, Roper'n, you will paddle past charming areas like Styrsvik and Strengsdal. Beaches and piers will be found along the shoreline and it is generally easy to land, but be respectful of the cabin homeowners.

Once you reach Strengsdal, paddle south across the strait to the islands, Saueholmen and Grindholmene. Grindholmene islands have small sandy beaches on the south and north sides. This is a great place to take a break and stretch your legs.

Continue paddling until you reach the Tjøme shoreline, paddle southwest, and further south until you reach Fergeodden peninsula and Vrengenbrua bridge. Here you will see the Red Cross Help Corps of Tjøme and Hvasser.

The next nice place for a break is at the small recreational area at Sundenestranda beach. Continue west until you reach the small islands, Saltbuskjær, located right on the edge of the shoreline. From here, paddle north across the strait to the small peninsula, Bjønnhue on Nøtterøy, and follow the shoreline north back to Kjøpmannskjær.

Pay attention to the boat traffic along the entire route.

At Kjøpmannskjær you can find:

  • Grocery stores
  • Public restrooms
  • Fresh water
  • Parking
  • Cafes
