Munken Hiking Trail
Impressive peak in Jotunheimen National Park
- Destination: Jotunheimen National Park
- Season: June-November
- Difficulty: Demanding
- Distance: 18.9 kilometers (loop)
- Elevation Gain: 1,210 meters
- Duration: 10-12 hours
Munken is one of the seven summits that offshoots from the mountain Kalvehøgde, and is located on the northeastern part of the 10km long glacier situated in the southern part of Jotunheimen.
While hiking to Munken you will pass through the lush Leirungsdalen valley, with 2,000-meter peaks towering on both sides of you. The valley here becomes narrower and the hillsides become steeper the closer you get to Kalvehøgde. You will see Munken standing out more than the others with glaciers on either side.
There are a total of 30 surrounding peaks, as you gain altitude, each peak is nicer than the last. During the trip, you’ll not only reach the summit of Munken, but also of Mugna and Rasletinden. Be prepared to do quite a lot of scrambling.
The National Map Institute chose the name for Munken, which means “The Munk” in English.
The closest stop is the “Heimdalen” bus stop, then hike the 1.6 km back towards Beitostølen to the parking lot. If you are traveling from Oslo, it’s easiest to take the NW161 Valdresekspressen.
Check out the other accessible adventures along the Valdresekspressen bus route: Valdresekspressen Pocket Guide.
Note: The Valdresekspressen bus route is in action from the middle of June until October.
Drive about 23 kilometers north of Beitostølen on road 51. The parking lot near the trailhead is located on the east side of the road.
The trailhead is located across the road from the parking lot and heads west into the Leirungsdalen valley. You will reach Munken’s peak by scrambling up the northeast ridge. Scrambling requires a lot of concentration and effort, but once you make it to top of Munken, the trip is surprisingly flat.
Note: It is very important to know that there are no signs or trail markings throughout the entire trip, so make sure you follow the Outtt's tracked trail on the app to ensure you do not get lost.
After reaching Munken, continue along the ridgeline to scale Mugna, the halfway point and the second peak of the hike. The Leirungsbreen glacier is below you on either side of the ridge.
You will reach the final peak of the hike, Rasletinden, if you continue following on Outtt’s tracked trail. This peak is located east of Munken and Mugna. After reaching Rasletinden, follow the trail down the northeast ridge, eventually heading east back to the trailhead and parking lot.
