About Skålgropfelt Tyinkrysset
The biggest cluster of cup marks in Valdres is located at Oppdalstølen at Tyinkrysset in Vang with 12 fields.
Gro O. Kyvik says the most cup marks can be found in loose blocks and earth-fixed stones. We can compare cup marks in Valdres with those in Indre Sogn both in terms of design and distribution. The cup marks are often located in areas with good view to the surrounding landscape, as here at Oppdalstølen.
The cup marks in summer farm areas are often located in historic pasture farms, while cup marks in the valley are often placed at burial grounds from the Iron Age without being able to say that they were made in the same period. However, for some reason, they are placed in the same places. The vast majority of cup marks in Valdres are round in shape.
Although cup marks are found all over the country, Valdres and Sogn are special in that cup marks mainly are found in summer farm areas. Vang has 16 registered fields and Vestre Slidre has 14. In Nord-Aurdal there are registered 4 fields, while Øystre Slidre has 1. In Vang there have been counted 365 pits, while there in all of Valdres are 730 (INNS 1995).
Getting there: Drive E16 to Tyinkrysset, where you take the rv 53 towards Årdal for approximately 700 m. Park here just outside of the road. You walk from here onto a gravelled minor road along the hillside for about 450 m until the cup mark field.
