Raudhovden is the highest peak on the ridge just northwest of Vognillan. It’s easily recognizable with a large antenna at the top. The area has excellent terrain for mountain biking and most of the trails can be ridden both up and down. Each of the north, east, and south sides of Raudhovden are worth exploring and it’s easy to spend a whole day biking around them.
Follow road 70 west from Oppdal towards Sunndalsøra. After 7 km, turn right onto Nerskogvegen (road 512). After a further 1.9 km, turn to the left over Dørreselva river to Hindset. Here you’ll find Storløkkja parking lot. The lot is primarily used for cross-country skiing in winter, but in summer there are usually a few spots available.
From the parking lot, follow the signposted trail along the fences towards Grøtsetra, before it turns and heads directly towards Raudhovden. Be sure to follow the trail and avoid crossing into the farmland.
This trail is the most demanding option down from Raudhovden. There are steep sections towards the top with sudden turns and bare rocks. Further down, there is some fun cruising with jumps over two streams and some marshy parts.
These trails are shared with hikers and runners and it’s the responsibility of bikers to slow down for others. If you want more chance of having the trail to yourself, head out early in the morning.
