About Fugleliv i Lomendeltaet
The Lomen Delta is a protected area aimed to preserve an important resting place for migratory waterbirds (loons, divers, geese, ducks, cranes, shorebirds and gulls). The place has the greatest value for the birds during spring migration. But also in the fall some birds rest here, especially ducks. Sparrows and some waders nest in the lush, diverse vegetation west in the area.
The delta is located on the border between the municipalities Vang and Vestre Slidre, 368 masl.
Begna has built up the delta with loose soil (sand, gravel and stone) deposited by the river mouth in Slidrefjord. Nutrients which Begna brings along allow for very high production of small animals and plants, which in turn are food for birds. In the spring, the water in the Slidrefjord is low, and the large open mud flats and shallow water areas attract large amounts of bird.
Also birds that nest in Valdres use the area as their last resting place while waiting for the snow to defrost in their nesting places higher up.
In total 126 species have been observed in the area. 63 of these are wetland birds, among them 25 types of ducks, and 22 species of waders.
