Hike on the threshold between Jotunheimen and the lush valley of Vang
- Destination: Valdres
- Season: January-November
- Difficulty: Medium
- Distance: 4.2 kilometers (out‑and‑back)
- Elevation Gain: 440 meters
- Duration: 4 hours
Mounting Horntind gives you great rewards without too much effort. From the top, enjoy the view of the snow-covered Jotunheimen peaks reflecting themselves in the lakes of Øyanden and Steinbusjøen. For a contrast to this bare mountain landscape, continue southeastwards along the ridge to discover breathtaking vistas of the lush valley of Vang and Vangsmjøsa Lake.
The trail is well-marked and easy to follow, except for some steeper parts towards the top.
From Fagernes, take Road E16 towards Vang. Continue to Tyinkrysset and exit onto Road 53 towards Øvre Årdal. Drive for about 4 kilometers, then turn right on Road 252 towards Eidsbugarden. Drive for another 1 kilometer and park your car on the left-hand side of the road.
The closest bus stop Tyin is situated approximately 1 kilometer from the trailhead. Walk along Road 252 towards Eidsbugarden and you’ll reach the trailhead on the right-hand side of the road.
There are several buses running from Fagernes to Tyin: the local route 138, NOR-WAY 162 Øst-Vestekspressen as well as NOR-WAY 160 Valdresekspressen. Use Norway bus express’ travel planner or Entur to organize your trip.
Follow the construction road towards Yljeosen Lake running up on the opposite side of the road from the parking. The road ascends some 150 meters before flattening out and traveling downwards in the direction of Øyangen Lake.
Before you reach Øyangen, turn off the road and onto the trail leading up to Horntind. From here the trail is marked by cairns with white Vs. Follow the trail as it leads you across a flat stretch of land. Continue some 800 meters and you’ll see some green plains approximately 250 meters to the southwest of the marked trail. This used to be the site of the old summer mountain farm Maristølen. It's a nice place for a rest before ascending to the top.
Having crossed the flat stretch of land, the trail ascends to the top. The trail is easy to follow, however, there are some steeper sections towards the peak. At the top, stunning views of the Jotunheimen mountains await. For the best view of the valley of Vang and Vangsmjøsa Lake, a tip is to continue southeastwards along the ridge for about 1-2 kilometers until you reach a viewpoint of some 1,408 meters above sea level.
Descend along the same trail.
