- Duration: 1-2 hours
The Kløvstien trail climbs up the steep mountainside, past Stigfossen Waterfall, to the Trollstigen Viewpoint. The trail is the old road between the regions of Romsdal and Sunnmøre, and weaves up alongside Trollstigen Road.
Until Trollstigen Road opened in 1936, Kløvstien was the only route up and down the mountainside. It was a dramatic and dangerous journey, only navigable on foot.
Today, tough sections of the trail feature chains and stone steps for increased accessibility.
The trail starts from the viewpoint and parking lot at the base of Trollstigen, also known as Trollstigfoten.
The trail is clear and well signposted.
From the southern end parking lot (the end closest to Trollstigen) follow the path down towards the river.
Cross the bridge and continue until you meet the path from Bøsetra. Turn left and follow the path along the base of the mountain towards Stigfossbrua Bridge. The last 150 meters before the bridge is steep and there is a chain to help you up.
After Stigfossbrua Bridge, follow the road around two of the hairpins before the trail starts again, on the left. From here, the trail is clearly marked and easy to follow, crossing the road twice more before it reaches the top.
- Sturdy hiking shoes or boots are recommended
- Free parking
